What did you believe about God before becoming a Christian?

About God, I had the idea that he was a being, that he had to be there, in control of everything that happened. I wasn’t sure about any of this, but I held on to the idea that there was a supreme being. I didn’t know what He was thinking, why he had created me. If in fact he had created me, for what purpose had he created me? The one thing I thought I knew was that I had to be good, so I wouldn’t be punished.

What was your opinion of Christians, and of the church?

I didn’t have a negative opinion of Christians, but I had a lot of prejudices against the church. I thought that it was a place where they were going to prohibit all of the things I liked doing, a place where I would be obligated to have to give up all of the things I was doing at that time. I didn’t understand why I needed to change. And later I started realizing that I didn’t need to change because I was obligated, but because there were things I did that didn’t please God, and these things kept me from having a good relationship with Him.

Who influenced your decision to believe?

Ever since I was a child, many people have influenced me, who tried, in some way or another, to bring me to God. And later, some people came into my life who spoke to me about deeper things. They talked to me about the Bible, they read to me from the Bible, which I didn't understand at first.
As I continued to grow, one specific friend really influenced my life. Her name was Gisela. She invited me to participate in a small group, and I went because I cared about her. I believe that it was the patience that she had with me to teach me things and the love that she gave, despite the fact that I didn't always show her the same, that influenced me to become more curious about the Bible and to participate more in the group.

Nevertheless, it wasn't until four years later that I really accepted Jesus. I went through many things, including traveling to a new country, being far away from Giselle, from the church, and from my family. I think that some of the sad experiences were the ones that brought me closer to God, maybe loneliness.

What changed in your life after deciding to follow Christ?

One of the most notorious changes was that I had become a fan of cigarettes. I think one of the important decisions that I made [after becoming a follower of Jesus] was quit smoking, because I knew that it wasn't God's plan for me, or for my health. I understood what it meant to take care of my body. And it had been something that I thought I would never be able to quit.

Another thing that changed was my relationships with others. One of the things that I have tried to improve since that moment until today is  my relationship with my family. As much as possible, I try to be a better daughter. With my friends, I try to be more considerate. I believe that these things have been changing ever since the day I gave my life to God until today, and that they are giong to have to keep changing, keep improving. I know that God is with me in every moment to help me, to give me strength, and to teach me.

But God showed his great love for us by sending Christ to die for us
while we were still sinners.
